What Are Respiratory Therapists?
Respiratory therapists are trained to administer medical gases and help with resuscitation, thereby helping patients to breath. RTs are in charge of delivering and maintaining airways for people on artificial life support, or those who just need some health care guidance. Respiratory jobs require you to act as a teacher, informing and educating patients on how to prevent and treat lung diseases. Some of the diseases are asthma, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, heart failure, and chronic bronchitis.
Careers and Employment
As a respiratory therapist, the different professionals you will work with depends on the location you choose. In most cases, RTs work directly closely with doctors, nurses and and other health care professionals on a daily basis. You will be an integral part of patient care, having great knowledge and experience for helping patients.
Respiratory therapists can find work in many different locations. Hospitals offer many different specialties for the RT field. Emergency departments, ICU, transport teams. If you love babies, try labor and delivery rooms or newborn ICUs. Most hospitals also have outpatient clinics for pulmonary care.
Hospital jobs tend to be fast-paced and require you to treat new patients more often. If you prefer, there are respiratory jobs available in nursing homes or patient homes. This type of job leans more toward ongoing care for the patient and educating the family how to treat and prevent lung diseases. You will have closer patient relationships with this type of job.
Education and Training
To gain employment as a respiratory therapist, there are educational requirements. An associates degree and at least two years of outside training are needed. If you choose to advance your career in the respiratory field, you may take an exam and become a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
After more education, and two more respiratory exams, you can become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Research which qualifications are needed for jobs in your area. While an RRT has more education, CRT certification may be enough to qualify you for higher-paying respiratory jobs.
